How to Set Up AI Marketing Automation

Setting up AI marketing automation involves connecting your communication channels, importing your customer data, defining your business rules, and setting goals for the AI agent to work toward. The system starts learning from day one and improves its decisions as it collects more data about how your customers respond.

Before You Start

You need three things ready before setting up AI marketing automation. First, at least one communication channel configured: an email sending provider, an SMS provider, or both. Second, customer data to work with: at minimum a contact list with email addresses or phone numbers, ideally with purchase history and interaction data. Third, a clear idea of what you want the AI to accomplish, whether that is welcoming new subscribers, re-engaging inactive customers, driving repeat purchases, or all of the above.

If you already use email marketing or SMS marketing on the platform, your channels and customer data are already connected. The AI marketing agent works with the same infrastructure.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Connect your communication channels.
Link your email sending provider (SMTP credentials or a service like SendGrid, Mailgun, or Amazon SES) and your SMS provider. The AI needs the ability to send through these channels on your behalf. If you have a chatbot configured, that channel is available automatically. See How to Connect Email, SMS, and Chat to One AI Marketing System for detailed setup.
Step 2: Import or verify your customer data.
The AI agent reads your customer database to make decisions. Make sure your contact records include accurate email addresses and phone numbers, any purchase or interaction history you have, and opt-in status for each channel. If you are importing from another platform, bring as much history as possible. The more data the AI has, the better its decisions will be from the start.
Step 3: Define your business rules.
Business rules are hard constraints the AI must always follow. Set frequency limits (how often the AI can contact any one customer per week), quiet hours (time windows when no messages are sent), channel permissions (who has opted in for email vs SMS), compliance rules (TCPA, CAN-SPAM, GDPR requirements), and content restrictions (topics or offers to avoid). See How to Set Marketing Rules Your AI Agent Follows for the full list.
Step 4: Set your marketing goals.
Tell the AI what you want it to accomplish. Goals might include welcoming new subscribers with a personalized introduction sequence, re-engaging customers who have not purchased in 30 days, recommending related products after a purchase, recovering abandoned browsing sessions, or driving repeat purchases from one-time buyers. The AI translates these goals into individual actions for each customer.
Step 5: Start with a conservative approach and expand.
When you first turn on the AI agent, start with conservative settings. Set lower frequency limits, enable human review for the first batch of messages, and monitor how customers respond. As you build confidence in the AI's decisions, increase autonomy by raising frequency caps, reducing the review queue, and adding more goals for the agent to work toward.

What Happens Next

Once activated, the AI agent begins evaluating your customer database immediately. It identifies opportunities based on the goals you set and starts taking action within the rules you defined. You will see the first messages go out within hours.

The learning curve is steepest in the first two weeks. The AI is gathering data about how your specific customers respond to different messages, channels, and timing. During this period, review the AI's decisions regularly and adjust rules if needed. After the initial learning period, the system settles into a rhythm and requires less frequent oversight.
