How to Write Scripts for AI Video
The script is the single biggest factor in AI video quality. A mediocre tool with a great script produces better video than a great tool with a mediocre script. Yet most people skip the script entirely, pasting blog text or writing off the top of their head, and then blame the tool when the output sounds flat. Spending 30 minutes writing a proper script saves hours of editing and regeneration later.
Step 1: Define the Video Purpose and Audience
Before writing a single word, answer two questions: What should the viewer know, believe, or do after watching this video? And who specifically is the viewer?
Write a one-sentence purpose statement. "After watching, the viewer will understand how to set up their first automated email sequence." Or "After watching, the viewer will understand why our product saves 4 hours per week on reporting." Every line in your script should serve this purpose. If a sentence does not move the viewer toward the stated outcome, cut it.
Knowing your audience determines tone, vocabulary level, and assumed knowledge. A script for software developers uses different language than a script for small business owners, even if both cover the same topic. Write for the specific person watching, not a general audience. If your video will be watched by two very different audiences, produce two scripts rather than trying to serve both in one video.
Also decide on video length before writing. A rough guideline: 150 words equals approximately 1 minute of spoken video. So a 2-minute video needs a 300-word script, and a 5-minute video needs about 750 words. Exceeding these targets means your video will run long or the AI will rush through the content.
Step 2: Structure With Scene Breaks
Every AI video platform works better when your script is broken into discrete scenes. A scene is a self-contained unit of 2 to 4 sentences that covers one idea and corresponds to one visual concept.
For script-to-video tools like Pictory and Fliki, scene breaks tell the platform where to change the background footage or image. Without explicit breaks, the tool guesses where scenes end, often splitting mid-thought or holding one image for too long.
For avatar tools like Synthesia, scene breaks let you change the avatar's background, add a new slide or screen recording behind the presenter, or shift the avatar's position. A continuous script with no scene breaks produces a single static shot of the avatar talking, which gets monotonous after 60 seconds.
For text-to-video generators, each scene needs its own generation prompt. Write the narration for each scene, then write a separate visual description for what should appear on screen.
A practical structure for a 2-minute video:
- Scene 1 (15 seconds): Hook with the problem or question
- Scene 2 (20 seconds): Context, why this matters
- Scene 3-5 (20-30 seconds each): Main content, one key point per scene
- Scene 6 (15 seconds): Summary and call to action
Mark scene breaks clearly in your document. A blank line between scenes, a scene number, or a horizontal rule all work. The goal is that anyone reading the script can immediately see where each visual unit begins and ends.
Step 3: Write Conversationally for AI Delivery
AI voiceover engines produce natural-sounding output when the input text reads like natural speech. They produce robotic output when the input text reads like written prose. The difference between these two is more specific than "write conversationally" implies.
Use contractions. "You'll see the results in real time" sounds natural. "You will see the results in real time" sounds stiff. AI voices handle contractions well and they signal to the listener that this is spoken communication, not a document being read aloud.
Keep sentences short. Target 12 to 18 words per sentence. AI voices lose natural intonation in sentences over 20 words because they cannot predict emphasis as accurately over longer spans. Long sentences also lose the listener, who cannot re-read what they missed, the way a reader can. If a sentence has more than one comma, it is probably too long for video narration.
Use direct address. Say "you" and "your" frequently. "Here's how you set up your first campaign" is more engaging than "The first campaign can be set up by following these steps." Direct address makes the viewer feel the content is for them personally.
Avoid passive voice. "The report is generated automatically" sounds detached. "The system generates your report automatically" sounds active and clear. AI voices deliver active voice with better energy and pacing.
Avoid jargon unless your audience uses it daily. Technical terms that your audience knows are fine, since they signal competence. But unexplained acronyms and industry-specific vocabulary that a newcomer would not recognize reduce comprehension and engagement. When you must use a technical term, define it briefly on first use.
The read-aloud test is mandatory. Read every sentence of your script aloud before generating video. If any sentence makes you stumble, pause unnaturally, or sounds awkward, rewrite it. This single practice eliminates 80% of AI voiceover quality issues.
Step 4: Add Visual Direction and Pacing Notes
Visual direction notes tell the AI (or your editor) what should appear on screen alongside the narration. Pacing notes control how the AI delivers the voiceover. Both dramatically improve output quality.
Visual direction: Write bracketed notes that describe the visual for each scene. For script-to-video tools: "[Stock footage: team collaborating in modern office]" or "[Product screenshot: dashboard overview]". For text-to-video generators: "[Generate: A product designer working at a desk with a tablet, bright natural light, medium shot]". For avatar tools: "[Slide: Bar chart showing 80% cost reduction]" or "[Screen share: Email campaign builder interface]".
Pause markers: Use commas and periods to control pacing. A comma creates a brief pause. A period creates a full stop. An ellipsis (...) creates a longer dramatic pause. Some platforms support explicit pause notation like [pause 0.5s]. Strategic pauses before key statistics, important terms, or transitions give the viewer time to absorb what was just said.
Emphasis markers: Bold or capitalize words that need emphasis. "This feature saves you FOUR HOURS per week" will cause most AI voices to emphasize "four hours" more than an unmarked version. Use this sparingly, emphasizing everything means emphasizing nothing.
Pronunciation guides: For brand names, technical terms, and acronyms, add phonetic spelling in parentheses. "SCORM (skorm)" or "Kubernetes (koo-bur-NET-ees)". Most AI voice platforms also have pronunciation override features, but catching these in the script is more reliable.
Step 5: Test and Iterate With Your AI Tool
Generate a first pass of the video and evaluate it critically. Do not listen passively, actively check for these issues:
Unnatural pauses or rushing. If the AI pauses in the wrong places or rushes through important sections, adjust punctuation. Add commas to create pauses. Remove commas that are creating unnecessary breaks. Some tools let you adjust per-scene speed, slow down complex explanations to 0.9x and keep straightforward content at 1.0x.
Mispronounced words. Note every mispronunciation and add phonetic guides. Regenerate only the affected scenes rather than the entire video.
Mismatched visuals. In script-to-video tools, review each scene's selected footage against the narration. Replace footage that does not match what is being discussed. In avatar tools, check that slides and screen recordings align with the spoken content.
Pacing and rhythm. The video should feel like it has a natural rhythm, not monotone and not jumpy. If the pacing feels off, the issue is usually sentence length. Vary sentence length within each scene: a longer sentence followed by a short punchy one creates dynamic rhythm.
Plan for 2 to 3 revision cycles. The first generation shows you what needs fixing. The second generation is usually 80% to 90% of final quality. The third generation is for minor polish. Trying to get perfection in one generation wastes more time than the iterative approach.

Scene 1 (Hook, 15 sec): State the problem your audience faces. One sentence, specific and relatable. "If you've spent hours manually generating reports every week, you know how frustrating it is when the data is already outdated by the time you finish."
Scene 2 (Solution intro, 15 sec): Introduce your product as the solution. Keep it to the high-level value, not features. "Product X generates your reports automatically, pulling fresh data every hour, so your team always works from current numbers."
Scenes 3-5 (Features, 20 sec each): One feature per scene. State what it does, then why the viewer cares. "The dashboard builder lets you drag and drop the metrics that matter to your team. No SQL, no spreadsheets, just the data you need in the layout you want."
Scene 6 (CTA, 15 sec): Tell the viewer exactly what to do next. "Start your free trial at [URL]. Setup takes 5 minutes and you'll see your first automated report within the hour."
Training Video Script Template
Scene 1 (Context, 20 sec): Explain what this training covers and why it matters. "This video walks you through our expense reporting process. Getting this right saves you time and keeps the finance team from sending follow-up emails."
Scenes 2-5 (Steps, 30 sec each): One procedure step per scene. Pair narration with a screen recording or slide showing the exact interface. "Log in to the expense system using your employee ID. You'll see the dashboard with your recent submissions on the left and the new report button at the top right."
Scene 6 (Summary, 15 sec): Recap the key points. "To submit an expense report: log in, create a new report, upload your receipts, select the cost center, and submit for approval. The whole process takes about 3 minutes."
Social Media Clip Script Template
Line 1 (Hook, 3 sec): The single most compelling or surprising statement. "Most businesses waste $5,000 a year on video production they could automate."
Lines 2-4 (Value, 20-30 sec): Deliver the insight, tip, or information. Short punchy sentences. One idea per sentence. "AI video tools produce the same quality for under $100 a month. Here's the exact stack I recommend..."
Line 5 (CTA, 5 sec): Ask for engagement. "Follow for more AI tools that actually save money."
Common Scripting Mistakes
Starting with "In this video, we will..." Nobody cares what the video will do. Start with what the viewer will gain. "In this video, we will show you how to reduce costs" becomes "You're about to cut your video production costs by 90%."
Including too many ideas per scene. One idea per scene. If you find yourself writing "Also..." or "In addition..." within a scene, you need a new scene.
Writing for readers instead of listeners. Sentences with parenthetical asides, semicolons, or complex clause structures work in articles. They fail in video narration because the listener cannot pause and re-parse the sentence. Simplify every sentence to a single complete thought.
Forgetting the visual component. A video script is not a voiceover script. Every scene should have both an audio component (what is being said) and a visual component (what the viewer is seeing). If your entire script could work as a podcast, you are not using the visual medium effectively. Make sure there is visual change every 10 to 15 seconds.
Great AI video starts with a great script. Use short sentences (12 to 18 words), break content into 2 to 4 sentence scenes, write conversationally with contractions and direct address, add visual direction and pacing notes, and always read aloud before generating. The read-aloud test alone eliminates most AI voiceover quality problems.
