What Is Split Testing and Why Does It Matter for Marketing

Split testing is a method of comparing two or more versions of a marketing message by sending each version to a random segment of your audience and measuring which one performs better. It matters because it replaces guesswork with evidence, letting you make marketing decisions based on how your actual customers respond rather than what you think will work.

How Split Testing Works

The mechanics of a split test are simple. You take a single element of a marketing campaign, create two different versions of it, and randomly divide your audience so each group sees only one version. The institutional knowledge is equally valuable. After a year of testing, your team knows that question-format subject lines outperform statements by 12% for your audience. When to Start Split Testing

The best time to start is now, regardless of your list size or marketing sophistication. You do not need thousands of contacts to run a meaningful test. A list of 500 people is enough to test email subject lines, though you will need to run the test for longer to accumulate enough data. As your list grows, your tests will reach statistical significance faster and you can test more variables simultaneously.
