How to Set Rules That Override AI Learning
Why Rules Are Necessary
Self-learning AI is designed to adapt and improve, but there are areas where adaptation is dangerous. Your compliance requirements do not change because the AI observed a pattern suggesting they are inconvenient. Your brand's position on controversial topics should not shift because a few customer interactions seemed to push in a different direction. Your data handling procedures exist for legal reasons that the AI cannot evaluate through pattern recognition alone.
Rules create a fixed framework within which learning happens safely. The system can learn the most effective way to communicate your return policy, but it cannot learn to ignore the return policy. It can learn which tone works best for different customer segments, but it cannot learn to use language that violates your brand guidelines. Rules are the guardrails that keep self-learning AI beneficial instead of unpredictable.
Types of Rules You Can Set
Behavioral Rules
These define what the AI must always do or never do in specific situations. Examples include always escalating conversations that mention legal action, never discussing competitor products by name, always confirming the customer's identity before discussing account details, and never offering discounts above a specified threshold without human approval.
Content Rules
These control what the AI can and cannot say. They include brand voice guidelines that must be followed regardless of what the system learns about audience preferences, prohibited topics that the AI should decline to discuss, required disclaimers that must be included in specific types of communications, and accuracy standards for factual claims.
Scope Rules
These define the boundaries of what the AI is allowed to learn about. You might restrict the system from learning personal customer information beyond what is needed for service, prevent it from drawing conclusions about protected categories, or limit the topics it can research through its curiosity mechanism.
Process Rules
These govern how the AI handles specific workflows. They might require human approval before sending communications above a certain importance level, mandate that certain types of decisions are always flagged for review, or specify that the AI must present options rather than making unilateral choices in certain domains.
How Rules Override Learned Knowledge
In the system's memory hierarchy, rules occupy the highest tier. When the system retrieves knowledge relevant to a current task, it loads applicable rules first and treats them as non-negotiable constraints. Any learned pattern, preference, or insight that conflicts with an active rule is suppressed for that interaction.
This override is absolute. A rule set by a human always beats a pattern observed by the AI, even if the AI has observed the pattern thousands of times with high confidence. The system does not gradually erode rules through accumulated contrary evidence. It does not present learned patterns as alternatives to rules. The rule applies until a human explicitly changes or removes it.
Practical Approach to Setting Rules
The most effective approach to rules is to start with a small set of critical rules and expand based on experience. Begin with rules that protect against your highest-risk scenarios: compliance requirements, brand reputation risks, data privacy obligations, and financial controls. These are non-negotiable and should be in place from day one.
After the system has been operating for a few weeks, review what it has learned and identify any areas where you want to constrain its future learning. If you see the system developing a pattern that is technically effective but not aligned with your values, add a rule rather than just correcting the individual behavior. Rules prevent the pattern from re-emerging, while one-time corrections only address a single instance.
Avoid over-constraining the system with excessive rules. The value of self-learning AI comes from its ability to adapt and improve. If every possible behavior is dictated by a rule, you have built a rigid rule-based system rather than a learning system. The goal is a small set of well-chosen rules that protect critical boundaries while leaving the system free to learn and optimize within those boundaries.
