Why Pipelines Matter for Multi-Agent AI
Many tasks that seem simple are actually multi-step processes. Writing an article requires research, then writing, then review, then publishing. Building a software feature requires planning, then coding, then testing, then documentation. Handling a complex customer inquiry requires understanding the question, searching for relevant knowledge, drafting a response, and verifying accuracy.
Without pipelines, these multi-step processes happen ad hoc. An agent might skip a step, do steps out of order, or produce output that the next step cannot use. Pipelines formalize the process so that each step is completed properly before the next one begins, and the handoff between steps includes all the context the next agent needs.
Anatomy of a Pipeline
A typical pipeline has several components:
- Stages: The individual steps in the process. Each stage has a clear definition of what happens and which agent handles it.
- Entry criteria: What must be true before a stage can begin. The writing stage cannot start until research is complete and the research output meets quality standards.
- Exit criteria: What must be true before a stage is considered complete. The review stage is not done until all quality checks pass.
- Handoff data: The information that passes between stages. Each stage produces output in a format that the next stage expects.
- Fallback paths: What happens when a stage fails or produces output that does not meet exit criteria. Typically, work flows back to a previous stage with specific feedback about what needs to change.
Common Pipeline Patterns
Content Pipeline
Research agent explores topic and gathers sources, then content agent writes draft using research, then review step checks accuracy, voice, and SEO, then publishing step puts content live. If review finds issues, the draft returns to the content agent with feedback.
Coding Pipeline
Orchestrator identifies a coding task from active goals, then coding agent plans approach and implements the change, then quality agent reviews code for bugs, security, and standards, then documentation agent updates relevant docs. If quality review fails, code returns to the coding agent with specific issues to fix.
Customer Service Pipeline
Incoming inquiry triggers the service agent, which searches the knowledge base and drafts a response. If confidence is high enough, the response is sent. If not, it goes to a human review stage. Either way, the resolution feeds back into the knowledge management agent to potentially update the knowledge base.
Multi-Step Evaluation Passes
Some pipelines include multiple evaluation passes where the same work is reviewed from different perspectives. A coding pipeline might have a functional review (does the code work?), a security review (is it safe?), and a style review (does it follow standards?). Each pass is a separate stage that can be handled by different processes or the same quality agent making multiple passes with different criteria.
This multi-pass approach catches issues that a single review might miss. A functionally correct piece of code might have a security vulnerability. A well-secured piece of code might violate style conventions. By separating concerns into distinct review passes, the pipeline produces higher quality output overall.
Pipeline Scheduling and Concurrency
Pipelines do not all run on the same schedule. A content pipeline might produce articles on a weekly cadence. A customer service pipeline runs in near real-time as inquiries arrive. A research pipeline runs on a daily cycle to check for new market developments. The orchestrator manages these different schedules, ensuring that pipelines have the resources they need when they need them.
Multiple instances of the same pipeline can also run concurrently. Three articles might be moving through the content pipeline simultaneously, each at a different stage. The orchestrator tracks each instance independently, ensuring that stages complete in order for each item even though multiple items are in flight at the same time.
Monitoring Pipeline Health
Pipeline monitoring shows you how work flows through each stage: how long each stage takes, where bottlenecks form, how often work gets sent back for revision, and what the throughput rate is. These metrics help you identify where pipelines need adjustment. If the review stage is sending 40% of content back for revision, the content agent's configuration might need improvement. If the research stage is consistently the slowest, the research agent might need more resources or a more focused scope.
