What Is Local AI and How Does It Compare to Cloud AI

Local AI refers to any artificial intelligence system that runs on hardware physically located at your premises or under your direct control, as opposed to cloud AI that runs on a provider's remote servers. The term encompasses everything from running small open-source models on a laptop to deploying enterprise AI platforms on dedicated servers. The key distinction is who controls the hardware and where the data lives.

The Local AI Spectrum

Local AI spans a wide range of implementations. At the simplest end, tools like Ollama and LM Studio let you run small open-source language models on a personal computer. These models run entirely offline and never send data anywhere, but they are significantly less capable than frontier cloud models. At the more sophisticated end, self-hosted AI platforms run on dedicated servers and combine local data management with cloud AI model APIs for the best of both approaches.

Understanding where your needs fall on this spectrum helps you choose the right approach. Open-source models like Llama, Mistral, and Phi can run on consumer hardware with adequate RAM and, for better performance, a GPU. The advantages are complete privacy and zero dependency on external services. The disadvantages are significant: these models are substantially less capable than Claude, GPT-4, or Gemini, they require considerable hardware for acceptable performance, and they lack the broader knowledge and reasoning ability of frontier models.

Local-only AI is appropriate for specific use cases where privacy is absolute and quality requirements are modest: basic text classification, simple question answering from a fixed knowledge base, or environments with no internet access. It is not appropriate for tasks requiring sophisticated reasoning, nuanced content generation, or complex multi-step analysis.

Cloud AI

Cloud AI services provide access to the most powerful models available through web interfaces and APIs. You get frontier intelligence without managing any infrastructure. The trade-off is that your data, including prompts and context, travels to the provider's servers for processing. Cloud AI is ideal when data sensitivity is low, when you need the best available AI quality, and when you prefer zero infrastructure management.

Self-Hosted AI: The Middle Ground

Self-hosted AI combines local data control with cloud AI quality. Your platform runs locally, keeping all data, memory, and knowledge on your server. Cloud AI models are accessed through APIs for reasoning, with only the specific prompt content leaving your network.
