What Google Actually Says About AI Content
Google updated its guidelines in February 2023 to explicitly state that AI-generated content is not against their policies. The helpful content system evaluates whether a page provides value to the person who searched for it, not whether a human or a machine wrote the words. Google's Danny Sullivan has repeated this position multiple times: "Our focus is on the quality of content, not how content is produced."
This does not mean all AI content ranks equally. Google's systems are very good at identifying thin, repetitive, or unhelpful content regardless of its source. Content that includes specific numbers, real examples, actual product features, or concrete steps ranks better than content that speaks in generalities. This is where most AI content fails. The E-E-A-T Factor
Google's E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) applies to all content. AI content demonstrates expertise by including specific, accurate, detailed information about the subject. It demonstrates authoritativeness through topical clustering and consistent coverage of a subject area. Trustworthiness comes from accuracy, proper sourcing, and a well-maintained website.
The "Experience" component is where AI has an inherent limitation. AI cannot share firsthand experience with a product, a customer interaction, or a business challenge. The best AI content systems address this by incorporating real data from the business, customer quotes, case study results, and specific implementation details that could only come from actual experience with the subject.
How to Test Whether Your AI Content Is Ranking
Google Search Console is the definitive source. After publishing AI-generated content, monitor which pages get indexed, which queries they appear for, their average position, and click-through rates. Compare the performance of AI-generated pages against your existing human-written content on similar topics.
